Caps vs. Crowns vs. Covers

Knowing the parts of your chimney and their importance will keep you ahead of the game if there is an issue. There are many parts of a chimney as you may already know. All of which are very important to the function and safety of a fire in your fireplace. Today we will discuss three parts of the chimney that may seem like they do the same thing but are very unique in their part in the overall success of your season of burning fires.

The three components that we will discuss today are the chimney cap, crown, and cover. So, what exactly are these and what are their roles in the effectiveness of your chimney?

Chimney Cap

The chimney cap is a metal cover that sits on top of the chimney. The cap is usually made of copper or steel. Its main job is to protect the chimney, keeping rain, animals, and debris from entering the chimney. Adding a cap will also help with the integrity of the chimney by preventing water damage to the inside of the chimney. Chimney caps may also help with the downdrafts.

Chimney Crown

The chimney crown is made of cement. A slab that sits on top of the chimney. It is slanted so that the water runs away from the chimney opening, working as a barrier against water entering the chimney. The crown plays a major part in keeping water and snow from getting into the chimney. Water can be detrimental to the masonry of the chimney. Damage to the chimney crown may lead to deterioration of the chimney masonry.

Chimney Cover

Also known as a chimney chase. The cover is made out of stainless steel, metal, or copper. The outer cover is made of wood that mimics the structure and material of the house. The cover sits on top of a prefabricated or factory-built chimney. The cover takes the shape of a chimney crown. The cover acts as a barrier from the elements and protects the top of the chimney. Its shape is so that water is directed away from the chimney itself.
