What is the Flashing Made Out Of?

There are four common materials that the chimney flashing is made of.

Copper

Because copper is extremely durable, long-lasting, and rust-proof, copper makes an excellent material for flashing. The downfall is that copper is quite expensive.

Aluminum

A more affordable option that resists rust; however, less durable than copper.

Steel

Steel is prone to rust, so not ideal. However, it is sturdier than aluminum.

PVC

Only to be used in warmer climates, as it is subject to cracking.

What Are The Different Types of Flashing?

Counter Flashing

Flashing is installed up the walls of the chimney and the roof. The flashing is attached to the brick of the chimney, similar to a step flashing.

Apron Flashing

The apron fits along the base of the chimney. Shaped like an “L” to secure the gap that is found between the roof and the chimney.

Step Flashing

Attached to the roof and vertical wall, such as the chimney or siding. Using a number of “L” shaped metal pieces, layered under the shingles. This creates a stepped pattern.

Open Valley Flashing

Inserting a metal flashing in the valley of a roof. The valley is usually where two intersecting roofs join.
